Would I stay at this location
again:

Most likely
We had a very pleasant stay. It is conveniently located near Nijo Castle. Breakfast was complicated by the fact that it was assumed that we would be taking full buffet rather than a la carte, however the adjustment was readily accepted. It would have been useful to know about the existence of the courtesy bus service from Kyoto station before arrival.

"Although the ANA is a little far out for a good choice of restaurants in which to eat each evening, the rooms are larger than most for this price in Japan, the staff are extremely helpful, and it is in an excellent position for public transport - subway, buses etc. It doesn't take that long to walk into the centre. Better toiletries in the bathroom than most for this price. Excellent food in the restaurants, but indifferent in the coffee shop. WE ate Japanese food elsewhere - a good little restaurant a few steps away. If you are used to travelling in Asia, ANA is worth it for larger accommodation - we never bothered using taxis. Japan is extremely safe for western travellers, even walking at night given the usual precautions. English is not spoken as much in Kyoto but a basic polite vocabulary and some knowledge of Japanese manners and customs is all you need. Plus lots of smiles and bows. Kyoto is one of my favourite cities, well organised, public transport even into the country simple, and we take day trips out of Kyoto without any problems."

"I stayed here at the ANA Kyoto hotel. On the plus side the staff is polite and efficient but at the same time definitely more formal and officious than other hotels I stayed at in Japan. The rooms are of ample size, even for western standards; certainly not as cramped like some hotels in the country, but the decor is pretty drab. The hotel has a nice lounge area that overlooks a beautiful exterior waterfall. The breakfast was good. While the area is quite safe, the location is not great, unless you are there to visit the incredible Nijo castle, just across the street. You'll need to take a cab just about anywhere you want to go and there's not much you can walk to in the area. This seems to be a popular hotel with Japanese businessmen; not so much with other Western tourists. The hotel lobby reeks from cigarette smoke, because of the proximity to the lounge. There are better choices for the money, and unless you need to be right across the street from the Castle, you might find a more centrally located hotel better for those who are here to experience the city and surrounds. It is certainly clean, and the staff were professional, but it strikes me more as a three star hotel -- maybe a stretch to four, but no more, in my opinion. I'll be staying elsewhere on my next trip."
