| "Disclaimer: I write this review without any experience or knowledge of other Ryokans.
The ikoi-no-ie Ryokan was, even though it was cheap, not really worth its price. Speaking of the price, it is possible to pass on cleaning the room for all days but your last, and get a discount of 250yen/day for that. So, duh.. I suppose I will mention the good things first though:
The place is about 10min from the Kyoto Station and 5min from a big temple. There are a lot of temples in the vicinity as well, easily reachable either by feet or with the subway. In the lobby of the Ryokan, there is one computer station for internet access free to use for guests, 24h/day, as well as a bunch of books about Kyoto and sightseeing Kyoto for everyone to check out.
Our room itself was located about 20 meters away from the Ikoi-ni-Ie building, and the room itself was pretty clean. The bathroom, while small, was ok - everything worked. Oh and A/C was available as well. Unfortunately, this is about all the positive things I can mention about it! Bad stuff in not so long sentences:
The washing machine was so dirty, it was straight unusable. The provided washing detergent box was empty too o_0. It was pretty hard to get ahold of the manager/owner, he was almost never at the front desk, and the provided ringing-button wouldn't do much. He spoke somewhat understandable English though, which was convenient. As the other review already mentioned, there was no wi-fi access, which is kind of (read: very) inconvenient. But, there weren't any electrical plugs in the room anyway, so if you wanted to use any electrical device, the microwave, a/c or TV had to be unplugged.. all 3 for ourselves ;)
The Ryokan itself is located in a very small street, hidden among about 23487 other small streets, some of which just stop in the middle of nowhere. The first day, we gave up on searching after a while and had a taxi driver search for us - a very nice taxi driver at that! After about 30min, he found it by leaving his taxi/us somewhere and asking random people if they knew of it. So, in darkness, even after staying there for 3 days.. it is kinda hard to locate.
Last but not least, the futons provided in the rooms were very bad and downright uncomfortable to sleep on.
All in all, considering the cheap price and very good location.. it is an ok place if you just need a place to sleep at for a few days, while visiting Kyoto and places around Kyoto.. but I wouldn't really consider Ikoi-no-ie for a multi-week vacation. Better spend a few more yen and get one of the many real hotels (or better Ryokans) around. " |

| "Hi,
This ryokan was so so..
Good things:
- close to the station
- somewhat cheap
- free internet in 1 pc at the lobby
Bad things:
- no wi-fi access
- very difficult to find
- the bathroom was awfully small and cheap
- the washing machine was very dirty and the soap box was empty (the rest of the appartment was clean tho)
- barely any plugs
It's not too bad for a few days if you just need a place to sleep." |
