It has a great location on the main road directly north of the Kyoto main railway station and near the junction of this and Shijo Dori (one of the main shopping streets) so for that alone, I would recommend it. I cannot fault the service that this hotel provided the staff were practically falling over themselves to help: taking umbrellas, hailing taxis, carrying bags and so forth. The room was well presented but having upgraded (and paid for the priviledge) to stay on the womens only floor (which did feel very safe and was particularly quiet), we were a little disappointed by the lack of space in our twin room. You have to pay about £8 to use the onsen on the top floor but it is worth doing at least once as it is very nice indeed. The beds were comfy and breakfast was super. Don't use the French restaurant if you are vegetarian and/or hungry. We stayed there three nights but I would rate the Aranvert Hotel, a few blocks closer to the railway station (Gojo Dori) as better value.

| "We stayed in Kyoto for two nights at The Monterey. All three of us (adults) stayed in a twin room with an extra bed. Surprisingly, the room was big enough to accommodate us comfortably. The facilities were excellent, and the staff were helpful. There is a bicycle hire store just around the corner, which made it really easy to get around and cover Kyoto thoroughly over two days." |

| "I honestly recommend this hotel. Its perfect location in the middle of the city (1 min walking to karasuma station underground or kawaramachi station) near the old city and entertainment area (about 10-15 min walking). Staff excelent and english-well-speakers(they were taking good care of every detail, question or problem we had during the stay). Room is not so big (japanese size) but clean, modern and very comfortable. If we come back to Kyoto I won't think to find another hotel I will just check-in this one." |
