The best part about this hotel was...
The best part about this hotel was by far the room. It was simply beautiful. This was by far the hardest room for us to leave in Bali, and every time we came back to the room we lost 4 grey hairs and 2 wrinkles each. We were glad to get a plunge pool, though it was too cold to use (I doubt it's ever warm enough in Ubud to use these deep pungle pools-- they should heat them).
My husband had a bit of an accident in Ubud shortly after arriving there (watch out for the sidewalks) and I cannot commend the staff enough for their gracious, attentive, and immediate care. They were incredibly thoughtful and helpful, and made a potentially VERY bad moment (and ruined honeymoon) fade into an inconvenience. We are deeply grateful to the hotel staff for ensuring that the remainder of our honeymoon wasn't ruined, and for taking wonderful care of us.
The grounds are not the big draw here, though they are interesting in a meditative sort of way. There is an interesting little path down to the river, and you can walk along the upper ridge of the surrounding valleys, as well. Some rooms do have much better views than others, so inquire in advance. The room service is wonderful, so go for it if you're in the mood. You can eat inside, or in bed, or on your terrace, or by your pool... they will take excellent care of you and the food is very, very good. Have a banana cream, and try the Balinese breakfast. My favorite Nasi and Mie Goreng were at the Pita Maha.
The shuttle is not as inconvenient as I had imagined before going to Ubud; it was actually really great, and if they see you walking around town, they'll pull over and ask you if you need a ride. I also highly recommend renting a car or van with a driver to tour whatever it is you'd like to see, for the convenience, comfort, and price value. There are many interesting things to see nearby.
We had 2 spa services. The spa is rather disorganized so I'd recommend aranging services prior to arrival. The foot reflexology was unfortunately really just a bad leg massage, but the traditional lulur in the villa spa was probably the single best spa treatment I have ever had. Ever. And I'm pretty spoiled as far as spa services go.
The bathroom toilet in our room oddly had outdoor views to the courtyard and outdoor shower/tub, which was irritating. But the outdoor shower and tub were, well, wow. Really great.
The hotel offers a free library of DVDs and books, which we used and were grateful for. The bed was really very comfortable, as was the other furniture in the room. The lighting was nicely done and easy to use, and the TV was huge.
There are restaurants very nearby. (Side note because it is so often recommended online: we considered Mozaic but it reminded us a bit too much of the overpriced chi-chi places you can find in NYC, and for NYC prices. If you do go, ask for a garden table.)
I would heartily recommend the Pita Maha to pretty much any traveller to Ubud, including families and seniors but especially to small groups and romantic couples. Physically disabled people may have a little trouble with the rustic steps and pathways.
