I do not normally bother to write reviews, but this place was exceptional and so I feel that I should. We had four fantastic nights at Ayatana and it is certainly the nicest hotel that I have stayed in, in Chiang Mai.
From the moment we walked in the front door (mind the unexpected step, my girlfriend didn't) we were extremely warmly welcomed.The hotel is presented in the traditional Lanna Thai style, which is really lovely. As soon as you walk through reception, you find yourself in a very pretty courtyard with a dining area and lovely swimming pool that looks so beautiful when lit up at night.
We booked a deluxe room which is essentially the same as the other bedrooms, but with the added benefit of a balcony and as I smoke and my girlfriend doesn't, this was worthwhile for us specifically. If this is not a consideration for you then you would do as well to get a normal room, unless you really want to splash out and go for a suite.
The food there is also a delight. Their Thai green curry is possibly one of the best I have ever had and believe me I have had a few. It cost about £3.50, which I know some people may say is expensive for Chiang Mai, but for a 4 star hotel and such great quality, it really is a steal (my mouth is actually watering as I write this just thinking about it!)
The only downside for some is the location. It is up Soi Wat Umong and about 800m from Suthep Road. To get to Soi Wat Umong from the west sideof the old city it is very approxiamtely 1.5km up Suthep Road which only costs 60THB in a tuk tuk, but if you want to go out late at night from the hotel and decide to walk out and find your way a tuk tuk can be hard to come by. They will however drop you into town if you ask at reception.
Basically, if you want to find somewhere beautiful,relaxing and quiet where you will be spoilt, this is it. We went on to stay in a suite for 5 nights at the Chiang Mai Shangri-La and my girlfriend wanted to cancel and come back to Ayatana. Enough said.

This is our third stay at the Ayatana, it is a short walk out of town but well worth the quiet location. It is closer to the tourist venues (elephant park and Tiger sanctuary etc) The hotel rooms come fully equipped with all a traveller requires. The staff are excellant and go out of their way to ensure you have a good stay. We will be back again in the near future.

We were met by a staff member from the hotel upon our arrival at the Chiang Mai Airport. She was friendly and was proficient in English. When arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by the friendly staff. In the room, there was a personalized letter from the manager, which was welcoming. It was great because they provided a ride into the city in the morning and to the night bazaar at night for those of us who wanted to go. The location of the hotel is a bit off the main road and proved to be difficult for some drivers to find the place, but once on the property, it was nice.

We just came back from a stay at Ayatana. It was a wonderful boutique hotel. We stayed at a deluxe room and its abosulutely worth the extra money. The bathroom is of middle-east decor and quite stylish. The room size itself is smaller than expected (as compared with what I see from the hotel official site). But other than this, everything is perfect.
Breakfast is plentiful and we simply cannot finish it all and have to cancel some items. We dint see other guests much during our stay so its all peaceful and quiet.
The staff are wonderful. I need to go online near midnite. And even after they have shut down the notebook, the staff is more than willing to take it out again and reconnect and do everything for us. they are just so friendly and helpful.
Oh remember they have transfer to / from airport too. So give them a ring when u arrive at the airport. The hotel is located way inside an alley and some taxi drivers dont know about it.
I will definitely stay again for my next visit

Well presented hotel but some of the reviews on the breakfast range are true. It really isn't up to scratch and the veg options are no better. The fruit selection together with cereals was very poor. The front staff are a bit childish and do not seem to take concerns of guests particularly seriously. Nice hotel to look at and walk around, but I doubt I will stay again.

The Ayatana hotel is a must! The staff is extremely nice and helpful. The rooms are lovely and have nice typical Lanna decoration. The hotel is not located near the center but this is a plus is it is still within the city and close to the Zoo, highway and airport and also very quiet and far from the noises and business of the center. The scenery is lovely and I totally recommend it!

Ayatana is a nice hotel, with excellent service by staff who are always keen to help with a ready smile. For instance, they readily recommended us a good hilltop restaurant with authentic northern Thai food when we enquired. The driver, a petite lady, then drove us to the restaurant and told us to call her when we are done so she could go back to fetch us. Such personlised service was not highlighted in the hotel promotional literature but was cheerfully rendered nonetheless, at no extra cost. They also have an extensive collection of movie DVDs which was an added bonus. We also enjoyed a nice massage at the hotel spa which was thoroughly relaxing, if a tad pricey.
The downsides: There were not a few mosquitoes and light flies, which was to be expected given the lush greenery surrounding the property and within the hotel itself. Still, some pest control is perhaps needed. The hotel also seemed to be under-staffed at times, although it was the low season when we went. Another minus is the food standards at the restaurant, which was rather pedestrian and at times even a let-down.
