"Nice place, but shame about surroundings"
4/5  Posted by MR. KONG, Fook Phin, Malaysia in December 2007
"My family and I have stayed in the hotel for four days three nights and the first impression given to us is - Rooms are Old and Small. Some refurbishment need to be done in order to provide a better image of Shangri-la worldwide. However, the food and the environment especially the Garden area are the most enjoyable for all of us. Foods are very well presented and prepared. Taste very good. I will definitely stay there again in my next trip to Kathmandu. Thank you Gilbert Kong - Malaysia."

"We stayed at this hotel twice during our trip, two nights each time. Hotel booked via internet and not possible to change. Otherwise, we might have changed to another hotel. The name and logo are somewaht misleading that it is managed by Shangri-la Group. Don't judge from the photo file. Rooms are very old and bath rooms are poorly maintained. The hotel manager did try to make up the dissatisfaction by giving us the garden view. But their staff are very helpful."

"The Kathmandu Shangri-la is a very nice hotel in a most convenient location. It's a short hop by taxi to Thamel, etc. or an easy walk if you have more time. The best feature of the hotel is the beautiful garden/restaurant area in the back. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind after travelling in Nepal or just wandering around in (sometimes) hectic and noisy Kathmandu. The service is great. Nepali people tend to be very kind, and the employees at the Shangri-la go out of their way to greet you with a smile and to help you in any way that they can. The facilities/amenities are not the same as those in a fancy, modern place, but they are just fine. I love the homey and 'old-fashioned' feel at the Shangri-la. We will stay there again. We miss their garden all of the time. "

"The room was nicely decorated although a little small and the beds small but comfortable. Had a wonderful view of the garden. The staff were friendly and helpful except for a couple of female receptionists who seemed to find it difficult to smile. The reception area and the main bar were particularly well decorated. The downstairs ladies 'rest-room' had a wonderful lemongrass aroma. It is difficult to say whether the area was good or bad as one was immediately hit by the frenetic traffic (almost literally) and hoards of people on leaving the hotel which were abundant everywhere."
