Would I stay at this location
again:

Absolutely!
I had a wonderful night at Hotel 1929. It's too bad that I only had my last night to enjoy it. I stayed at the Swissotel the Stamford during my first 3 nights for business. I chose to stay at 1929 during my trip extension to enjoy Chinatown during the New Year celebrations. Yes, the rooms were small. I was quite surprised by its size, even if I was already forewarned about it. But I loved my room. I stayed at the 3rd floor, and had a balcony of my own, facing Keong Saik Road. The bathroom is, like the room, very small. You only have a small space to manoeuver in between the toilet bowl and the glass door. But it does have both an overhead and a telephone shower. And you read it right, the bathroom walls are of glass. I wouldn't recommend the standard rooms if you're staying with a friend or to parents travelling with children (spare then the traumatic experience of seeing you naked!). I did get to see the "larger" rooms, they were still small, though. The beds were larger, a queen, I think. My standard room only had a single--but it was comfortable. The staff were friendly and they contribute to the warm, cozy environment. Hazley, the receptionist, arranged for my check in and check out. Online information said that the earliest check in was at 2-3pm, but Hazley checked me in as soon as I arrived at a little past 1pm. I also requested a late check out--at about 2pm, 2 hours later than the published 12pm check out--with ease and no charge. Breakfast was fair, but I really didn't expect much after reading your reviews. On the buffet table, they had 2 kinds of bread (small croissants and cream bread slices, which you can toast), 2 kinds of cereals, 2 kinds of yogurt, 3 kinds of spreads (kaya, orange marmalade and blueberry jam), butter, tea, coffee and orange juice. This kind lady (whose name I forgot to ask) will ask you if you prefer fried or scrambled eggs. She will serve you your plate of eggs with a small serving of pork and beans, a strip of bacon, and a small potato friend and cut in half. Breakfast starts at 7:30am at Embers, the restaurant downstairs. There are many small Chinese restaurants around the area. If you're on a serious budget, you can have a small lunch for about SGD4-5. SGD10 can give you a feast. The location was great. The heart of Chinatown (Smith, Sago, Pagoda, etc.) was just 5-10 minutes away. The map said that the hotel was nearest the Outram MRT station, but I couldn't find it. I usually take the Chinatown MRT station instead. However, not many taxi drivers are familiar with the location. Always bring a map with you or write down the hotel's address and keep it with you at all times. Taxis don't ply Keong Saik as regularly, so ask the receptionist to find you a taxi before you check out.

"A good location, with friendly, helpful staff. Room facilies were good, but the room was too small. With 2 people in the room, there was no space at all. As an example, there was only a 250mm space between the washbasin and bed. There was no place for a suitcase except on the floor in front of the door. The price of AUD$160 was too high for such a room. "

"Unusual place, full of classic chairs! Great for design freaks. The room was very small but was more than made up for by excelent service, facilities and location. Highly recommended."

"Although the room and bathroom were a little small, the staff were friendly and it was a couple of minutes walk from the nearest MRT station. Breakfast wasn't a huge offering but it was ample to start the day with. There was free wireless internet but I wasn't travelling with my laptop - what was required was a dedicated internet computer in the hotel for guest's usage."

"Free access to the internet and topped-up complimentary water/coke were a big plus. Breakfast was good and staff were very friendly and helpful with a good command on English. Our room faced a street and consequently noisy. Double-glazed windows would be advantageous for rooms facing the street."
