While conveniently located in Chinatown and close to Outram Park MRT, the Royal Peacock is poor value for money. I had a shabby attic room with a broken lock on the louvered bathroom door, inadequate lighting and no window to the world outside. Dirty tiles and patches of mould on the bathroom ceiling and around the shower base made a poor impression. The poorly-painted corridor outside had a filthy carpet and and an air conditioner that dripped water. The elevator was also very dirty. In keeping with the general tone of the place, the staff at reception were unwelcoming and unfriendly. A few courtesies such as 'please' or 'thank you' and a few more smiles would have made my stay more pleasant. On a more positive note, the buffet-style breakfast (included) was adequate and the dining room attractively presented. Singapore generally seems to have a severe shortage of clean, medium priced accommodation. In various visits to the country over the past 6 years, I have stayed in four different hotels but they have all been disappointing. Regrettably, the Royal Peacock was no exception.

"This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever experienced. The pictures on the site couldn't possibly be of the same hotel I stayed in. My room had one single bed pushed up against the wall because the room was only 8 foot by 8 foot and not even my suitcase could fit in it. The bed had an iron bedhead and there were not facilities. Of the few things provided they were broken. It was filthy and smelly. The breakfast was poor and the whole experience was disgusting. I stayed here the first 2 nights of my holiday and cried. I was scared to be in the place and wouldn't house my dog there. Avoid the place at all costs. Speaking of which to charge such high prices for this accommodation is criminal."

"Probably the worst hotel my wife and I have stayed in. Minimal breakfast, fausty smell in corridor, broken fittings in room and bathroom, leaking toilet, air con poor and not adjustable, painted walls chipped, our room was changed because of the noisy air conditioner towers outside but the second room while quieter was again small and drab. The worst complaint was the unhelpful female on the evening desk. Our first evening was spoilt by her incorrect advice as to where the SIA buses stopped, etc. "

"A bit of a mixup with computers down on arrival, and harrassed staff, so got a (reasonably big) room with no window, but this turned out to be a blessing as it was very quiet (others on street side said noise was a problem) Staff really tried to be friendly - only one reception man giving some others a hard time!- but the girl that promised to post my postcard and small packet has not so far come good, as the different guy on the desk promised she would - I did try to leave extra money to ensure postage was covered, but he refused it. This apart, good for the price, in an excellent location in Chinatown, and with free internet access. NB You can get the shuttle bus out from, but not back to, the airport for S$9 - but hotel really close to MRT"

"Excellent location to experience the real Singapore with great food and great local shops within walking distance. Absolutely in the middle of the overseas Chinese culture! Room is very small and many things falling apart but clean with good service."
