Hotel Review posted by tony, Singapore in September 2005

I was advised by a friend to put up @Hamilton cos i mentioned my intention of being close to the Itaewon area during my visit of earl/Sept05. Indeed, Hamilton's location is simply fabulous, so convenient, close to all forms of amenities, and with the train station right in front of it and the Incheon airport limousine bus station [arrives every 20mins]juz across the street; can't ask for more.
That said, there're several points that was, well, disappointing. First off, there wasn't any iron/ironing board, and more appallingly, the room guest has got to pay for the use of shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste provided in the room! [I'm wondering why those items are placed under the TV console and not in the shower room]. Frankly, I've travelled for the past 15yrs around the globe [albeit I wouldn't address myself as a globetrotter] and had put up in all manner of hotels, but this is THE first time that I've come across one that reqs guests to pay for such basic amenities for the room rate paid.
Perhaps this is a common practice in Korea? Tis my first visit to Seoul and the first and only hotel I've stayed in, the other being Koryo Hotel in Incheon where i spent 4days prior to Seoul; Koryo or course provided those said amenities FOC.
Service level wise, there wasn't much that i utilised there, but from observing other guests' interaction, there isn't much to shout about. However, I must sing praises of the front office staff [should have gotten his name; male, bespectacled, early thirties and speaks fluent English] who was eager to assist me with my queries of how to get from point A to B [eg from Hamilton to Namdaemun] and B to C [eg from Namdaemun to Dondaemun] and so on, and even went further as to suggest when , from where and from whihc direction of the traffic flow, to hail a cab back to Hamilton at the most economical cost! Now that's what I call "Excellent Service"! He deserves a PROMO!
Well, for the simply gr888 locale, I would still consider staying @Hamilton again should i decide to be in Itaewon. For those who aren't bothered with the frills and spills, tis worth it.

| "I've stayed here many times. I live in Korea and it's a great location in Itaewon. If you are looking for a good locale next to the subway and lots of western food it's a good place to stay. If you're looking for a place to experience Korean culture then stay near Jongno, City Hall, or elsewhere. Itaewon is packed with Americans, Europeans, Middle Eastern, Japanese, etc. It's a fun place, but not the real Korean experience." |

| "I was on business for my school in New Zealand. I stayed at the Hamilton Hotel for 3 nights, and by day was going out to visit agents and students' parents. In the evenings or early mornings I used the hotel's Business Centre for emailing. Everything about the Hamilton Hotel suited me just fine. I enjoyed my stay there. Staff were helpful and friendly. I also met a range of good people among the other guests.

| "I was immediately disappointed when I walked into my room at the Hamilton. For ninety dollars a night, I expected more than a clean, version of a Howard Johnson from the sixties awaiting me. The bed, while comfortable, was covered only with a cheap woolen blanket, which was an immediate turnoff for me. The carpet, the furniture, the bathroom. Everything, while again, well-cleaned, screamed out-of-date hotel.
We were really looking forward to the pool, but unbeknown to us, the pool is open to the public and has the reputation as a bit of a party spot. On a warm day, people begin arriving shortly after the 10 AM opening time, whereupon the drinking and loud music begins. It was not the relaxing pool atmosphere that any sensible hotel would offer, but more like something you would see on a singles cruise ship.
Even little things, like the internet room, really disappointed me. The computers were ancient, and in order to access the internet (3000 won for 30 minutes), I had to go down to the front desk and sign for it (as opposed to them giving me the password and username over the phone), which wouldn't be that big of a deal I guess, if the elevators themselves weren't straight from the fifties and didn't take fifteen minutes to get from the 5th floor internet room to the 1st floor front desk and back again.
All that being said, the location, right in the middle of Itaewon, is a fantastic spot from which to enjoy all the culinary delights that this area can offer. Quick and easy access to the subway, with most of the major hot spots no more than five or six stops away.
Bottom line is, that while the Hamilton is certainly stayable, the product it offers for the price it charges certainly makes it terrible value in my books. I've stayed in love motels for 30 thousand won that will give me just as satisfying an experience. " |
