In its previous life as one of Palma de Mallorca's most popular hang-outs for the island's international scene, the Hospes Maricel was the site of exuberant parties and exclusive events. The atmosphere today is a lot more leisurely, but the ghost of a decadent past somehow remains. Following a restructuring by architect Xavier Claramunt, traditional Balearic design elements of the original building have been brought back to life in the form of archways, arcades and pillars in marble and stone, and the densely-packed sandstone of nearby town, Santanyi. In comparison to the neo-classical entrance, Maricel's guestrooms were created with three basic principles in mind: comfort, space and light. Born of this philosophy, they have a functional, minimalist edge, using simple colors and textures. With vistas of the Mediterranean Sea to rival any on Mallorca, the hotel's terrace has an air of jet-set luxury. Arrive in your own yacht, sip a glass of chilled cava and savor local seafood against a background of brilliant blue.
