Having stayed in the Pratunam area for most of our visits to Bangkok (once every 2 mths), we were looking forward to staying at the Grand Sukhumvit. Having read the reviews and looking at the pics on the website, we were filled with high expectations.
Upon reaching the hotel, we were a little disappointed with the location as it was located right inside a small lane with lots of sleazy pubs. Apart from that, the main road leading up to the hotel was in a constant jam. It is fine if you are taking the BTS as it is walking distance, but if you're travelling out or back to the hotel in a taxi then the jam's a nightmare.
Having indicated our choice of rooms (king size bed, smoking and adjoining rooms) when we made our booking, we'd expected the rooms to be ready or at least blocked for us. Not only was it not done, we spent a good half hour standing at the reception waiting for them to sort out our rooms, and eventually we got rooms that fit NONE of our requirements (non-smoking, single beds and rooms separated). The rooms were nice and sizes were good though, and breakfast is pretty impressive.
Housekeeping was another nightmare when we returned at 4 in the afternoon to find that our rooms were not made up despite our request since morning. After calling the housekeeping TWICE, they turned up only after 40 mins later to clean our rooms!!!
No doubt the rooms and hotel is new and nice, we will not pay that price for that location, service that doesn't befit the 5 star status that the hotel claims itself to be.

| "No problems staying at this wonderfull hotel, everything perfect, breakfasts very good, only gripe was no seperate shower in bathroom, [silver room] although we were aware of this at time of booking. Staff all friendly and efficent, I even managed to negotiate a later check out time at no cost. minutes from skytrain if you are walking and 7-11 store only yards away, set back from Sukhumvit Road but no problems walking back late at night. free hotel tuk tuk if you dont want to walk, pool good but water slightly cold [but refreshing] The hotel is fine I would recomend it." |
