| "We loved the hotel but had a problem with sewage smells in the bathroom due to a problem with the Septic tank. On arrival we could not have our room and were offered a "tent" type room, we declined and were taken to their sister hotel for the night. the smell recurred each day we were there, however the staff did their best and were extremely helpful and friendly." |

| "We went to the Tropicana for our New Year holiday and were double booked for 2 nights of our 5 night stay!! Their solution was to put us up in another hotel which was completely basic and not up to the Tropicana's standards (Resortel).
Although we were able to use our hotels facilities during the day - we had to wait for transport there and back to the other hotel (around 1 hour after requesting a lift we got to the other hotel!!) which caused a great deal of stress and took a lot of valuable time from our days.
When we finally moved into the Tropicana (on New Year's day!!!) it was lovely but the stress of the double booking meant we weren't as relaxed as we should have been. After speaking to a great number of couples and families also on their holidays we found the same thing had happened to them!! Some people weren't even offered a room for their stay!! One couple also said that the same thing had happened in 2005 but were willing to give it a go again. Only after a great deal of discussiions with the staff and manager did we get some sort of compensation (a refund for the 2 days we were at the other hotel) but this did not make up for the fact that they had ruined our New Year.
If you are after a stress free relaxing holiday although the Tropicana looks good you would be better going to a nearby resort like Panviman or even the Amari hotel as at least they won't double book you!!" |

| "Beautiful setting although a bit isolated from shops but believe a plaza is being built closer to resort" |

| "The rooms are very good, the location is brill, however the food is very very expensive and nowhere near as good as the local restaurants (especially Ka Ti just 5 mins up the road)
The breakfast is basic and generally after 2 nights we did not eat Lunch or diner in the restaurant as the food is general 3 time the price of elsewhere.
Suggest stay and eat elsewhere" |

| "the location of the hotel is beautiful and the hotel is well-situated, with plenty of reclining deck chairs right on the beach and a very nicely designed infinity pool area as well. although many of the bungalows were occupied when we were there over xmas, it did not feel crowded. service and breakfast were excellent and the hotel staff is gracious, good at English, and very responsive to suggestions.
you do not actually get your own bungalow; each structure seems to house 3-4 units, and the walls can be thin, so if you have inconsiderate neighbors, you may hear them banging about in the night. if you are not running your air conditioner, you can hear normal conversation and tv quite clearly from next door. the layout and landscaping of the property were even more beautiful than the pictures on their website.
the crowd was a mixture of middle-aged european couples, families with young children, expatriates, wealthy thais, and a smattering of other asians. there were one or two western men with prostitutes when we were there, though most of the clientele are couples or families.
because the hotel is so new, the surrounding area is not quite as developed. you basically have your choice of eating either at the hotel restaraunt, the barali, the blue lagoon, or at the sprinkling of places right off the main road for lunch. because the hotel is a luxury property, things are somewhat more expensive there. e.g. internet access is 4 baht/min whereas elsewhere it is 2 baht/min; lunch for 2 is about 600 baht whereas elsewhere you can eat well for around 300 baht. but since everything is so cheap in general, we did not really mind getting charged double.
both white sands and kai bae offer more in the way of shopping and dining options. they are quite easy to get to via a 30-50 baht songthaew ride, and the songthaews travel regularly. the hotel is very quiet at night, so if you want nightlife, you have to travel to a nearby beach. the hotel itself is so lovely, though, we were perfectly content to spend our days just lying by the beach or by the pool. the beach area at the tropicana has nice wooden deck chairs, umbrellas, and regular service from the restaurant. compared with the plastic deck chairs at the barali next door, the tropicana is much better in this regard. the massages on the beach at the barali for 300 baht were, however, fantastic. we did not try the spa at the tropicana, but people we talked to who had said that it was lovely.
one experience we recommend very very highly is the cooking school at the blue lagoon, which is just a short walk away. the teacher is excellent, the food delicious, and the class includes a short tour of a local community garden and rubber plantation. it was our favorite experience on the island.
you can also walk up the beach at low tide to the cluster of properties in the next bay, which includes the new amari hotel and more travel agencies, etc.
all in all, we were very happy at the tropicana and would go back there. " |
