What began in 1960 as an alternative to the 'mainstream' Adelaide Festival of Arts, which offered limited opportunity to local and small artists, the Adelaide Fringe Festival is an open access event that allows anyone to register who has an aptitude for ideas and zest to showcase their arts to the public. For a long time, the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Adelaide Festival of Arts were inextricably linked so as to create an atmosphere of electric excitement all across the city. This year onwards, the Fringe Festival, Adelaide will stand as an event in its own right.
In 2006, the Fringe Festival, Adelaide was held with the theme of regeneration, reflected in the single origami crane that was made from previous Fringe posters. Held between February 24 and March 19, 2006, the Fringe Festival included a diverse program and retained its position as one of the world's biggest arts festivals, selling almost 190,000 tickets to over 500 events. This year, the Adelaide Fringe is about to transform the city into one of the most vibrant arts hubs in the world, from March 8 - 31. Beginning with the massive Opening Night Party to the moment the last prop is hauled up, the Fringe Festival will epitomize the creative essence of Adelaide.
