The current layout of the Kooyonga Golf Club, Adelaide has been achieved with only minor changes to Rymill's original design. It is a clear indication of his vision of the "Ancient Game". The beachfront home was named Kooyonga under the misconception that it was an aboriginal word for plenty sand, plenty water, which accurately described the site. Despite the misnomer, the name is spoken of with affection and reverence by golfers everywhere. The outline of the Kooyonga Golf Club, Adelaide has an abundance of undulating fairways that culminate in well-protected greens which demand respect.
Five Australian Opens and three Australian Amateur Championships have been decided at the Kooyonga Golf Club, Adelaide, apart from hosting numerous South Australian Opens and Amateur Championships. In 2005, the Kooyonga celebrated its 82nd anniversary. The history of Kooyonga has been inevitably linked to the greatest events of the world, but more than that, chance has played a key role in shaping Kooyonga's fortunes. During the time of his win in the 1972 Australian Open Championship, Peter Thomson probably best described Kooyonga from the golfer's perspective when he said, "It needs to be played with the head as much as the hands".
