Adelaide's first multi-purpose art center, the Adelaide Festival Centre, is located near the North Terrace and King William Street, near the banks of the River Torrens, next to Elder Park. The Adelaide Festival Centre is marked by its silver geometric dome roofs and its plaza that is made of Lego block-like structures. The home to South Australia's performing arts, the creation of the Adelaide Festival Centre was discussed by Sir Robert Helpmann and the South Australian Premier Don Dunstan in 1967/68. The reason was the limited capacity of the Adelaide Festival of Arts. Succeeding it, it was decided that the Adelaide Festival Centre be located at a waterfront.

There are multiple theaters located within the Adelaide Festival Centre. It is capacitated to hold a maximum of 5000 people. In fact, there are regular audiences of 2000 people and the venue is considered one of the best acoustic theaters in the entire Southern Hemisphere. Other theaters include the dual level Dunstan Playhouse that can seat 620 people and the Space Theater with a capacity of 600 people. There is also an outdoor amphitheater that can hold up to 600 people. The Adelaide Festival Centre provides dining and function facilities for displaying various art collections throughout the year.

Comprising a full proscenium art theater, the Adelaide Festival Centre includes an intimate playhouse, a versatile studio theater, an open space performance venue, a bistro, a late night bar and gallery space. The complex lies in close proximity to the Adelaide Casino, the Parliament House and the central railway station. Moreover, the Adelaide Festival Centre is a stone's throw from the city's major shopping precinct, the Rundle Mall. A major landmark, the Festival Centre had undergone substantial development in the year 2003. The much maligned Festival Centre was redesigned, including the underground plaza and the pedestrian suspension link, among other renovations.
