Port Adelaide, a suburb of the city of Adelaide, is located 14 kms northwest of the city and is the main port of the City of Adelaide. Today, the operation is handled by about 20 wharves of South Australia's exports including wines, motor vehicles, grains, ores and concentrates. The Adelaide Port was often the first place where migrants lived when they arrived in the city. The period between 1970 and 1980 saw the economic decline of the Adelaide Port on account of the changes in maritime activity and the transport of imported and exported goods in container ships. At present, the Adelaide Port enjoys resurgence that was prompted by the Port Waterfront Redevelopment Project, the largest waterfront urban development project to be undertaken in South Australia over the next decade. The development activities in the Adelaide Port include the Port River Expressway that connects Salisbury Highway to Victoria Road on Le Fevre Peninsula across the Port River. Adelaide Port is also home to the most successful Australian Rules football team - the Australian National Football Club. The Port Adelaide Magpies play in the Australian National Football League and has won 36 SANFL premierships. The team won the premiership in 2004. Today the Adelaide Port continues to be the main service point of shipping in the state. It is the gateway to the world as the Adelaide Port enjoys significant increase in export. There have been booms in terms of the shipment of grains, wine, machine components etc. in the Adelaide Port which is made of the Inner, and Outer Harbor, complete with 20 wharves such as the DP World Adelaide container port. Port Adelaide is a seaport city as also the historic maritime heart of South Australia. The Adelaide Port was one of the state's earliest settlements and represents the first State Heritage area of South Australia
