The National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide was established by a group of railway preservationist who wanted to preserve the steam engines and railway carriages that were used in Australia during ancient times. Initially, the museum was located in Railway Terrace Mile End. In the year 1988, the museum was relocated to its current place. Originally the museum was known as the Port Dock Station Railway Museum Adelaide. In the year 2001, the museum was renamed as the National Railway Museum Port Adelaide. The museum is a non-profit entity, which receives government grants during special projects.
This railway museum has a huge collection of railway engines, carriages and trains that are no longer used in the present day world. The entire museum has two huge pavilions and a heritage goods shed filled with more than 100 exhibits. Visitors coming here can take a look at the legendary 'Tea and Sugar' Train that operated in the Nullarbor Plain. You can also check out the Woodville Signal Cabin or check out the numerous photographs that show the role of women in the railways. For extra fun, you can also go for a train ride on The Semaphore and Fort Glanville Tourist Railway train. This train is pulled by a steam engine. Apart from this, you can also pay a visit to the Break of Gauge Railway Shop and purchase books, toys and DVD's on railways and other gift items. The museum is also home to 'Thomas the Tank' Engine and his friends.
The National Railway Museum Port Adelaide is open on all days of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum has facilities for conducting wedding ceremonies, birthday parties and conferences in its premises. Other facilities available include car parking facility, facilities for the disabled, picnic spots, fist aid services and others.
