River Torrens, Adelaide is one of the famous tourist's attractions here. The River Torrens flows presently from Mount Pleasant which is a small town in Adelaide Hills. This river before falling to the ocean at West Beach meanders and passes through the City of Adelaide. This 85 kilometer long river has Milbrook Reservoir, Hope Valley Reservoir and Kangaroo Creek Reservoir in its path.

The River Torrens, Adelaide catchment area is the largest of any waterway within the Adelaide region and is approximately 500 sq km. The 35 km of the suburban end of the river is bordered by running parks, with many playgrounds walkways and bicycle tracks, which were built to moderate floods and represent the earliest linear river park in Australia. On the south bank of the lake you can see the Elder Park which is a European style landscaped park with an ornamental rotunda. This river has a variety and lovely flora and fauna and this is a major source of attraction for this river. Yabbies, mussels and small fish has their food source in this river. But with the reduction of water quality and introduction of European fish the fauna and diversity of the river has been greatly affected. There has been a reduction of species like European carp, trout and Redfin Perch while native fish populations like the big headed gudgeon but waterfowl are common along the river with black ducks, wood ducks, black swans, ibis, egrets and herons amongst the more than 100 species seen. You will also find a number of alien waterfowl species such as mallards. But sadly it has reduced greatly in number nowadays. The steep banks of the river make an ideal home ground for long-necked tortoises. Bulrush, knobby club rush, spike rush, common reed, sea rush and pale rush are the common native reeds, sedges and rushes along the upper river.

The River Torrens, Adelaide is great source of recreation and enjoyment for both the tourists and the local people here. Besides rowing and fishing the footpaths on the riverbanks are filled with joggers and cyclists. Many Rowing clubs has been set up near this river. The University Boat Club and the Adelaide Rowing Club are located upon its banks.

The River Torrens has been a major tourist attraction over the years for its beautiful and diverse flora and fauna accompanied with other recreational facilities. Moreover this river has very much significance in Adelaide. So it is a must visit for the tourists.
