Fort Glanville Hill

Adelaide is one of the famous tourist's attractions in the world. There are many things here that keep the tourists enthralled. Fort Glanville is one of the must go in Adelaide.

Fort Glanville, Adelaide is a historical site and a popular attraction here. After Fort Glanville was commissioned in 1880, the Commonwealth took it over in 1901. During this time this Fort had lost its strategic grandness while its flanking guns were handed over to the City of Adelaide in 1907. Only one gun has been restored from this fort which is the largest gun in Australia.

Fort Glanville, Adelaide was taken over by the state in 1951 and was transformed into a caravan park. But on the 1960's realizing its immense heritage value the caravan park was removed and work for refurbishment started. Fort Glanville was opened for the tourist in the year 1980 after the declaration of it's as a National Heritage Site in 1978. This Fort has retained the essence of the past and is one of the few heritage sites which are in its original conditions. You can also see original guns that had been used, in this fort. There are five fireable cannons. The volunteers of the Historical Association act out on open days the scenario of 1880's military life with cannon and rifle firings and parade ground drill. You will find guided tours of the site and the adjoining buildings. The visitor's center here houses a museum, souvenir shop and refreshment area. Besides a number of other facilities like coach parking, Interpretive Centre, assistance for the disabled, parking for the disabled, toilet facilities for the disabled, barbecue facilities and many others, are extended to the visitors. The Fort Glanville is open generally for group visits. You can drop in any day but prior permission is needed.

Fort Glanville, Adelaide with its historical and cultural essence draws visitors. Check out this famous Fort, its worth a visit.
