The St. George's Church, Adelaide is one of the most famous historical structures of the city. It consists of the main church and a cemetery. This structure was built in the year 1848 on the land that was gifted by a gentleman named Captain John Finlay Duff. Almost 160 years old, this fabulous church is one of the symbols of Australia's colonial past.
The St. George's Church is famous for its architecture. The building was constructed according to the Kentish Masonry lines. The walls of the church are made of rounded pebbles. The pebbles were collected from the brook that flows throu8gh the Stradbroke Park located nearby. The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 18th of January in 1847 by Mrs. Frederick Bayne, the wife of Frederick Bayne, the esquire of Stradbroke. The consecration of the Church took place on the 30th of January in 1848.
The church also has a cemetery, where you can get to see the graves of some of the famous people of the city. The baby daughter of the first Bishop of Adelaide Augustus Short was the first one to be buried over here. While walking on the grounds of the cemetery you can get to see the graves of the graves of people like Dr. Christopher Rawson, Frederick George Waterhouse, Sir George Murray and other dignitaries.
