The St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral is fine example of neo-gothic architecture. The construction of the building started in the year 1869 and it was completed on 1904. In fact, the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid on the 29th of June, which is celebrated as St. Patrick's Day all through the world.
The entire structure is 60 meters long and the width of the nave is 9 meters. The main entrance of the church resembles the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. The rose window located on the main entrance depicts stories from the Bible and the life in South Australia. Some of the other outstanding features of this fantastic church include the clerestory windows built in 1991-93 and the chancel woodwork made of English Oak in 1926. You can take a look at the lantern tower, which is nearly 43 meters high and resembles a lantern.
The Westminster Stone is another attraction, which was gifted to the church by the Westminster Abbey on its 900th birthday. You can also marvel at the pavement candlesticks. These are made of terracotta. The St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral in Adelaide also has a small chapel called the Lady Chapel. It was built in the year 1904 and is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. This chapel is used for small services and is the perfect spot for meditation. The cathedral has eight bells, which are the heaviest compared to those found in the churches in the whole of Southern Hemisphere.
The St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral, Adelaide is open on all days of the week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Sundays, the church holds the Holy Communion from 8:00 a.m. in the morning. You can come and listen to the church choir also. The church also conducts a large number of art shows and other cultural program regularly for the people of the city. It conducts guided tours for the visitors also in Sundays at 2:30 p.m.
