Ghan Preservation Society Museum

One of the famous Museums in Alice Springs, Ghan Preservation Society Museum depicts the history of the legendary Ghan Railroad of Australia. Located on further south this museum is a recent addition to the tourist track of Alice Springs. The museum completed as a Bicentennial project, which preserves the 'Old Ghan' that was outdated in 1980, after the completion of the new standard gauge railway from Tarcoola to Alice Springs.

The Bicentennial project has restored a division of the old narrow gauge railway that served Alice Springs from 1929 to 1980. The siding at MacDonnell is beautifully and affectionately reinstated. Built in 1988, the railway station is based on a 1930 design for the projected railway station in Alice Springs. The idea of Ghan Preservation Society Museum is to preserve a section of the line that could be used for excursions, to set up a exhibit and museum where visitors could see and realize the manner the old line worked, and to preserve the history of this fantastic old train that was responsible for the progress of the town. At all times the station and rolling stock are on display and the museum remains open daily from 10am, to 5 pm.

At present, The Ghan Preservation Society Museum has a tea room, a book and souvenir shop and a ticket office for selling tickets on the 'Old Ghan' that runs 30 km down the track to Ewaninga each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The departure time of 'Old Ghan' is at 10.15 am and the arrival time is at 3.45 pm.
