Royal Flying Doctor Service
Alice Springs is the main base for Royal Flying Doctor Service that treats people living and traveling in the immense backwoods. An exciting 20-minute tour runs every half-hour, including a video and a talk in the communications room and allow another 30 minutes to look around the small museum. Some of the recorded conversations between doctors and patients are fascinating. This area comprises a nice garden cafe and a gift shop.

Reverend John Flynn established the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1928. His idea was to offer a 'mantle of safety' for the remote communities of inland Australia. In 1939, Royal Flying Doctor Service Central Operations started in Alice Springs to provide emergency and anticipatory medicine to remote communities and stations throughout Central Australia. By the use of latest in aviation, communication and medical technology, the service offer an wide healthcare network to those who live, work and travel throughout regional Australia and the vast Australian Outback and today the Service has grown to operate from bases in Adelaide, Port Augusta and Ayers Rock Medical Centre (Yulara). Central Operations covers South Australia, the southern part of the Northern Territory and on occurrences, areas within Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales - over 2.3 million square kilometres of land. Without the inclusive health service that the service provide, much of the remote area would be practically uninhabitable

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS, informally called The Flying Doctors) is the first, largest and most inclusive aeromedical organization in the world.
It is an air ambulance service and a not-for-profit organization that supplies both emergency assistance and basic health care to people who cannot easily get into a hospital or general practice due to the distances of the remote. The Service supports distance education.
