Opened in 1909, Stuart Town Gaol was in use until the year 1938. It was then closed. Built on Stuart Terrace a new prison replaced this gaol which is now available for public tours and a must see spot. Insufficient amenities, jeopardized by periodic deluge in the Todd River, at the former site adjacent to the southern side of Heavitree Gap, impelled the move, which was formally completed in 1909.

The construction of the Stuart Town Gaol and associated police station, located in Alice Springs, was commenced in 1907 utilizing the expertise of local builders with stone and timber obtained from the district.

Initially the structure was used by the police for storage purposes. It was finally built-in in the precinct design and properly restored.
