Alice Springs or Alice in Central Australia received its name in 1933. Cushioned
by the rugged MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs is a melting pot of cultures
and traditions.
Growing from humble beginnings, the spirited bush town of Alice Springs started
out in the 1870's as a lonely repeater station for the overland telegraph line
that ran the length of Australia and on to Europe. Locally known as 'The Alice',
it has known come a long way from its modest beginnings and is now a modern
town that still has a strong flavor of its outback heritage.
Though the isolated position of Alice Springs, situated in the middle of a
huge, sparsely populated continent has made it a legendary holiday destination,
its isolation is not to be mistaken for its lack of activities. There is a fantabulous
choice of things to do in Alice Springs.
