About the Event

This Melbourne International Arts Festival was initiated in 1986 by the Cain government as a counterpart to Festival dei due mondi and the Spoleto Festival USA. The Festival hosts various events in the realms of dance, theatre, music, visual arts and more.

Date: The festival is celebrated for 17 days in the month of October. In 2007 the events will be held from 11 th October to 27 th October.

Venue: Several venues across Melbourne.

Events: The events include those by reputed artistic companies and also by upcoming innovative artists. The various categories for the events are:

• Music

• Dance

• Opera

• Theatre

• Various other visual and performing arts.

Tickets : you can buy tickets online or purchase them from any Ticketmaster outlet over the country. From 9 th October a ticket booth would be set up at Melbourne Visitor Centre, at Federation

Participation: Participation in this Festival is only possible through an invitation from the Artistic Director. If you are interested in introducing your works to the director you may send samples of your previous work, background of your company and also the details of the artistic production to which you want to draw the Director's attention. Present Director : Kristy Edmunds is the present director of the Melbourne International Arts Festival and her will occupy this designation till 2008.

Past Directors : John Truscott, Richard Wherrett, Leo Schofield, Clifford Hocking, Sue Nattrass, Jonathan Mills and Robyn Archer have been the past artistic Directors of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Sponsors : Arts Victoria, ABC radio, Grand Hyatt-Melbourne, Tourism Victoria and other such reputed companies and organizations.

Credits: Melbourne International Arts Festival has been the recipient of the Drama Victoria Award of 2006 for Best Education Event for Drama and Theatre Students.
