Origin: The year 1954 saw the emergence of a very premium film festival in the heart of Australia, The Sydney Film festival which is 62 years old presently and is known worldwide for its unique sequence of creditable Australian as well as international and alternative movies. Time: This noncompetitive Film Fest is an annual affair and takes place for two weeks in the month of June. Venue: The first Festival commenced on June 11, 1954 in the four auditoriums of the Sydney University for four days. Till 1968 the venue remained the same after which it was shifted to Wintergarden in Rose Bay. Finally in 1974 the festival got its permanent Venue shifted to the historic State Theatre at the centre of Sydney. As umpteen number of Films comes to this festival every year it becomes difficult to accommodate all of them at the same venue. So the Dendy Opera Quays and two screens of the George Street Cinema Complex are also selected for showing some of the festival entries. Subscription: Most of the audience procure subscription for entire two weeks but one can also go for single session tickets or the flexipasses of ten, twenty and forty are becoming popular after being initiated to the festival since 2001. Characterstics: Basically the festival is nothing but an elaborate display of the works of Australian and other international film – makers. But since 1970 the organizers have arranged a competition for the Australian films which are less than 60 mins in duration. The Sydney Film fest conducts the best running short film contest in Australia. Kinds of Films which are eligible for the Festival : All kinds of features, documentaries and short films are eligible for participating in the Sydney Film Festival. There is no specific categorization of the movies. The films have to be16mm, 35mm, DigiBeta or Beta SP (PAL) in nature. The only restriction to enter this film is that it must not have been screened in the state of New South Wales before reaching Sydney Film Festival. Movies of all languages may be a part of this carnival but they have to be subtitled in English. Tourists would love to be a part of the most prestigious film festival of Australia.
