Location: Located 165 kilometres northwest of Hobart, Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clare National Park is in Tasmania. The park is a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site. It is spread over an area of about 1612 kilometres square it has always been a paradise for nature lovers. Accessibility: The nearest city to the park is Queenstown. One can take the Lyell Highway from the Derwent Bridge locality and reach the spot. Access from the north is generally via Sheffield, Wilmot or Mole Creek. Features: The Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park has a few most important sites, worth visiting. The park has numerous walking trails where the tourists wander and explore the typical flora and fauna of the place.
- The Overland Track is the most beautiful walking trail of the park. The track
draws more than 8000 walkers every year. The track runs from Cradle Mountains
to Lake St Clare. The topography of the trail is mountainous with meandering
rivers, alpine plains and tundra vegetation. Its best bush-walking zone of Australia.
Though it has several branching trails but the actual distance of the track
is about 80kms. Reputed across the globe for its impeccable beauty the trail
has been compared to the exotic Milford Track of New Zealand. Is advised for
the amateur walkers to go for walk along the Overland Track in the summers when
days are quite long and the weather is pleasant. The landscape of the trail
is marvelous. The common fauna found here is the Tasmanian Pademelons and the
rats, while the diverse vegetation include alpine herb fields, shrubs, mosses,
Eucalyptus forests and Myrtle Beech forest.
-The lakes of the park situated along the Overland Track are wonderful. Lake
St Clare, Lake Will, Lake Winderemere and Dove Lake are the four water bodies
which enhances the beauty if the park. Among these the lake St Clare is the
most inviting and charming.
-The Harnett Falls, ferguson falls and Dalton falls are the three vivacious
cascading fountains along the Overland track which attracts visitors for their
pristine waters.
-Mount Ossa is perhaps the one of the foremost attractions of the whole of
Tasmania because it's the highest peak of the country. The mountain is situated
right at the heart of the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park. Rising
to a height of 1614 meters the mountain is composed of Jurassic dolerite. There
is no need of rock climbing as the there is a clearly indicated track up till
the summit.
-Cradle Mountain: Perhaps the most popular and principal tourist attraction of
the region owing to its innate splendor. It is located at one end of the overland
track and the surrounding area has innumerable number of day walking spots.
Things To Do: Bush walking is the most admired activity for the visitors of this area. Along with it rock climbing and fishing in the lakes of the park are also popular. Accommodation: Plenty of accommodations are available for the tourists of this park. The Cradle Mountain Lodge costs about $203 per night are probably the best of the hotels in this area. While Cradle Mountain Chateau is another premium lodging which offers quality services at quite an affordable price. Apart from these the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village within the park and Cradle Mountain Highlanders cottages are also excellent places to reside. The prices of these hotels keep on fluctuating according to the seasons. The trip to Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clare National Park will be a lifetime affair if the arrangements are done previously. The Government of Tasmania has made tourist inflow to this park very restricted in order to conserve its pristine nature.
