The Fraser Islands is located in the Queensland area of Australia is some 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. The Great Sandy Strait separates the island from the mainland. The Fraser Islands can be accessed through a variety of transportation options that includes barges, aircraft, and launches. There are regular ferry services operated from Hervey Bay. Charted flights are there from the Maroochydore Airport to the Fraser Islands. There are innumerable tour buses that take you to the islands. However if you wish to come by a car then make sure that you posses a vehicle permit. The sand cliffs, the crystal clear lakes, the rippling sea water, the diversified flora and fauna bestow a distinct character to the Fraser Islands. The immense beauty of the 124 kilometers of the Fraser Island is impossible to be realized in its true colors even if you manage to take a long break from your busy schedule. The great combination of an aboriginal heritage and a European culture weaves a charisma that is very unique on its own. Listed as a World Heritage site in 1992, this part of Queensland has always been acknowledged for its beauty and simplicity. The island was names after Eliza Fraser who along with her husband were victims of a shipwreck. The Aborigines call the place as K'gari which is the synonym of Paradise. The world's largest sand island spanning to an extent of 120 kilometers was formed during the ice age as the strong winds blew sand from the New South Wales. The archeological sites present in the islands are a witness to the numerous aboriginal tribes who inhabited the area many thousand years. While the northern part of the island mainly of the Great Sandy National Park the southern part of the island is dotted by a total of 24 lakes. The vibrant and the diversified colors of the lakes have a refreshing change to offer. The sub- tropical rain forests of the Fraser is an amazing wonder for the tourists. The Island is a home to a diverse variety of birds and animals. Dotterels, pied oysters, kingfishers, falcons, flying foxes, wallabies, and turtles are some of the species that are unique to the place. If you are lucky enough you can witness the annual migration of the innumerable species of birds and animals that migrate to the coastal areas. These include the humpback whales that migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters of Queensland.
