Norfolk Island

Location: Norfolk Island is situated in the southern Pacific at the east of the Australian continent between New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is the main island of a group of isles in the territory. Covering an area of about 34.6km square the island has an extensive stretch of coastline and no large internal water bodies as such.

Accessibility: The Island can be reached by air. The Norfolk Island Airport facilitates the island in fetching visitors from other parts of the globe. Flights operated by Oz Jet, from Brisbane and Sydney arrive here quite regularly. Air New Zealand also have flights from Auckland to the Norfolk Islands. The island does not have any railways, waterways, ports or harbors in it.

Features: Irresistible backdrop with indigo trimmings clubbed with loads of nature's jewels make the island a haven for tourists. The sites which are bound to draw your attention are :

• The Mount Pitt Look out which gives a panoramic view of the entire isle.
• Norfolk Island Botanic Garden : one of the most popular haunt of the tourists which has a natural museum within it which delineates the visitors
• Cook's Monument: A lovely view of the island's coastline is visible from here and it's a birdwatcher's paradise.
• The picturesque Philip Islands which is said to have excellent sceneries.
• The summit of Mount Bates is refreshing and gives a view across the island. The walk upto the peak may let you have an encounter with some of the unique flora and fauna of the region.
• The Bird rock is another vantage point to have a look at the numerous species of birds
• The Palm Glen is another place which gives an across-the-board vista of the southern part of the island which extends upto the Philip Islands.

Things To Do: The Norfolk island is filled with exuberance as it offers a wide array of entertaining activities to be practiced. The major portion of the island is dedicated to national parks and reserves which has several walking trails that proffers spectacular vistas. Mountain biking and bush walking are also the other two favourite activities of the island. The island takes pride in having more than thirty clubs and the visitors are welcome to participate in the club activities. Different kinds of watersports like scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing and fishing are very admired in the island.

• Accommodation : The island has very few quality accommodations to stay in. The hotels at Burnt Pine are the best of the lot and are very popular with the tourists. The Colonial of Norfolk islands are the most widely known. The hotel has about 44 rooms of different category and average charges are about $136 per night. The Cumberland Holiday Apartments at Taylor's Road, costs about $118 and the South Pacific Resort Hotel at $111 per night are the other good lodgings of the island.
