Sydney Harbor Bridge is located in New South Wales of Australia. Located very near to the opera house of Sydney, this place is an interesting destination for tourists. Colloquially termed as the ‘Coathanger', the Sydney Harbor Bridge, serves as the main centre for vehicles, rail and pedestrian traffic functioning between the Sydney central business district and the North Shore . The bridge towered as the city's tallest structure until 1967. It has also its name include in the Guinness book of World Records for being the widest long span bridge and also the largest steel arch bridge escalating to a height of 134 meters above the harbor. The bridge that carries six lanes of road traffic, two railway tracks, and a bicycle path has its two paths ending at Dawes Point and Mission's Point. While the bicycle path lies along with the rail tracks are on the western side, the only footpath is on the eastern side of the Bridge. The Sydney Harbor Bridge is made of arches that are built of 28 panel arch trusses with their heights reaching to 18metres at the centre and 57 meters besides the pylons. The 503metres of arch can be increased by a height of 180 mm with the original height reaching to 134 meters. The giant pylons that are flanked on both sides of the bridge are only meant to decorate the bridge. It was in 1890 when plans to build a bridge across the harbor were proposed. The traffic confusion created in the area was the main reason behind the construction of the bridge. The final proposal was accepted in 1911. In 1912 when John Bradfield was appointed as the chief architect he based his idea on the model of New York's Hell Gate Bridge. But the World War I brought a halt to the entire plans unto 1922. Besides Bradfield, others names associated with the bridge are Laurence Ennis, Edward Judge, Ralph Freeman and Arthur Plunkett. The construction work started in 1923. The cost incurred din the completion of the Bridge was 10,057,170 pounds. The opening of the bridge on 19 th march, 1932 saw the presence of many notable personalities.
