Features

Uluru, often described as the second largest monolith in the world after Mount Augustus, has been described as “the remarkable pebble”. The famous site known for its rock formation extends to some 2.5 kilometers. The ownership of the park where this rock -formation is located was handed by the Australian Government to the local Aboriginals some years ago. Acknowledged as one of the best site in Australia, the place has been included as the World heritage Site for its diversified attributes.

What is most interesting about the rock is that it changes its color depending on the day-time and the atmospheric conditions. As such you can see the rock changing its color from soothing blue to glowing red. The rock is basically arkose which is course- grained sandstone rich in feldspar.

Explorer Ernest Giles in 1872 sighted the rock for the first time but he couldn't visit the sight as the lake Amadeus prevented him. The incomplete task was completed in 1873 surveyor William Gosse who named it Ayers Rock after Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers.
