Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere and hence the winter lasts from May to August while November to March are summer months. The general climate is dry and pleasant and visitors flock to Australia round the year. Europeans and visitors from western countries prefer to spend their winter holidays i.e. a vacation over Christmas and New Year at Australia. The warm sun kissed beaches are just right for getting the perfect tan. However a variation in climatic conditions makes various times of the year suitable for visiting specific regions within Australia. The northern coast lands experience rainfall from November through April where the tropical moisture-laden winds precipitate heavily and indulgence in any sort of water sport is rendered impossible. Thus the dry season lasting from May to October is the right time for tourists. Queensland too is at its best in the winter months (May to October). The northern regions of Queensland such as Cairns and Great Barrier Reef also receive heavy rainfall especially from January to March. One may avoid the high humidity levels of relatively cooler southern areas in Queensland such as Brisbane by touring these parts in winter. The cool crisp winter air is healthy and refreshing. New South Wales holds out its charming allure through out the year. The four distinct seasons, summer, autumn, winter and spring are well defined and visitors to these parts chalk out their itinerary as per the activities they prefer. The sunbathers and beach lovers prefer summer months (December-February) while those inclined towards skiing and such activities visit Snowy Mountains etc. from July to September. Victoria is best visited between November and April though a tourist to Melbourne may be left puzzled due to the erratic and daily variation in the weather. South Australia is known for its temperate climate and relatively dry conditions. Summers are pleasant and winters tend to be chilly. Autumn is the best season to visit South Australia tourist attractions such as Adelaide. Outback Australia is a dry desert region where temperatures reach extremes during the summer and winter seasons. Regions such as Alice Springs are best visited in spring or autumn. Western Australia enjoys moderate climate through out the year. Summer days are long and bright while winters are characterized by a high humidity. Spring and autumn i.e. September - November and March, April are equitable and the best seasons. December through February is the best time to tour Tasmania though tourists may need to look out for the rainfall that occurs round the year.
