Brisbane International Film Festival is held every year and provides a platform for films in Queensland in Australia. The film festival was first held in 1992 and focuses primarily on films of the Asia-Pacific region. The event is usually held for 24 days and the kind of films shown include documentaries, shorts, experimental, silent films and retrospective programs. The festival draws huge crowds every year and the turnout at the 2006 festival was around 315,000 visitors.
The main events of the Brisbane International Film Festival include the Opening Night, showcase events, “fast film� competition, a number of award ceremonies and the Closing Night celebrations. Films from countries like Korea, Iran, Germany, Indonesia, India, New Zealand and the USA are showcased in ‘The World Cinema' category and ‘Asia Pacific' category.
A number of free events are held during the Brisbane International Film Festival. More than 8000 members have participated in the free events in previous editions of the festival. Some of the free events include Fast Film, Public Programs, Cine Sparks and a number of Seminars. The free events are aimed to attract dedicated film buffs, the general public and children.
The Australian Film Festival for Young People, Cine Sparks was a part of the film festival's expansion plans in 2005 with a number of films, workshops and seminar held for people under the age of 18. Cine Sparks is extremely popular among school students. It is estimated that around 10,000 students attend the various sessions.
The Retrospective Section at the festival allows the audience to discover various films and film makers. This programme has showcased a variety of directors on various aspects of cinema. Lectures and Seminars are also conducted during the festival that gives cinema lovers an opportunity to match their minds with that of professionals from the film world professionals attending the festival. Topics range from on intellectual property issues for filmmakers to a debate on what's wrong with the Australian film industry.
The Fast Film competition gives participants 50 days to shoot a short film. The best films selected would be then screened at the Festival. The short film must incorporate a special and to be announced ingredient.
Every year the Brisbane International Film Festival acknowledges a contributor to Australian cinema through the Chauvel Award, named in the honour of Charles Chauvel. The award is presented by the Brisbane City Council and past recipients include producer Anthony Buckley, director Paul Cox, actor Bryan Brown, cinematographer John Seale, Geoffrey Rush and documentary makers Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson.
Jury Awards are also presented every year. The Festival plays host to three international juries who judge three awards which include the FIPRESCI Award, the NETPAC Award and the Interfaith Award for Promoting Humanitarian Values| Hotels in Brisbane | |
