Brisbane is a city, which renowned for its cultural diversity. The city is not only the center of political activities, but it is also the cultural hub of Australia. The cultural scenario of the city is always bustling with activities and there is no dearth of events and festivals in the city. These festivals and events of the city contribute significantly to consolidate the unity and integrity of the city. Lady Fest Brisbane is one of the major and significant festivals of the Brisbane. Lady fest Brisbane is a unique festival dedicated to the skills and interests of women; it is a festival that does not aim at money; in fact it is a non-profit festival. The event is an international phenomenon, which originated in the Washington in the year 2000. Lady Fest festival is celebrated for a cause. Although equality of gender is prescribed all over the world, but in practice women, even today are a deprived lot. They are not provided the same opportunities and support that are offered to the males. Lady Fest Brisbane aims to provide same level of peer support and validation enjoyed by males. Through the various activities, programs, seminars and forums, the festival tries to instill confidence and self respect in women. During the festival numerous activities are held that include live performances by bands and DJs, art and photography exhibitions, workshops and forums, as well as a market-style art, craft, zine and bake fair. The 2006 edition of the festival was celebrated with a lot of fanfare and enthusiasm in the month of November and displayed talents of women and girls around the world. The 2006 edition of the event saw two enthralling exhibitions at the Alibi Room and The New Farm Stockroom. Artists of Brisbane like Carmela Ruffino, Tricia Waterman, Cathering Insch, Sharon Lam and many more, gave scintillating performances to further enliven the event. Exhibitions on illustration, photography, painting, collage and fabric work were also held during the festival to commemorate the spirit of women. The festival also included a film festival dedicated to women that highlighted the path breaking films of Mary Ellen Bute. Several topics were discussed in the workshops and forums, ranging from sex to break dancing and burlesque. Overall the Lady Fest Brisbane is a novel effort and it acts not only as a platform for the talented women from all across the world, but also boosts the morale and heightens the confidence level of women.
