Paniyiri Festival is the famous celebration of all things Greek. It brings together the taste, sights and sounds, dance, atmosphere, laughter and flavours of Greece to Brisbane. This festival is a celebration of the Greek culture which you can experience sitting right here in Australia. The festival is packed with programs such as cooking classes, tours to churches, embroidery demonstrations, live entertainment, public lectures by Professor Bob Milne, photography and art exhibitions, musical theatre and recitals, exhibitions, a Greek Dance Party (Trella) and a Tavli (Backgammon) Tournament. A major attraction at the Paniyiri Festival every year is the innumerable beautiful foodstalls. These foodstalls showcase the taste and recipes of food from all regions in Greece. You will come across more than 30 foodstalls showcasing food from the different regions of Greece such as Aegean, Ionian, Pelopponnesian Island, Mainland Greece, Cyprus, Chios, Crete, Rhodes regions and many more. Food is consumed in huge proportions during the week long festival. Paniyiri Festival in Brisbane is held over the weekend during which festival goers consume about 100,000 honey puffs, more than 100,000 Souvlakia Dolmades, 18000 coffees, 500 kilograms of fired Haloumi cheese, 10,000 Shiftalies or Greek Cypriot sausage, 1000 kilograms of calamari and another 1000 kilograms of baby octopus. The hospitality during the annual celebration of Greek in Brisbane is fantastic. The celebrations are hugely popular in all over Australia and everyone is invited to attend the festival. The celebrations are held at the Musgrave Park during the middle of May usually. There are a number of other weekends that are conducted during the week of the festival. The main weekend of entertainment is held on from 2:00pm to 9:30pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 7.30pm on Sundays.
