The fort is one of the most remarkable structures to be found in Brisbane. Fort Lytton though may not be a popular site bit is considered to be quite an important edifice in Brisbane. However the fort has now been declared as a National Park and is maintained by Queensland National Parks and Wildlife services.
History of Fort Lytton: The fort was built in the 1800's and was created in order to defend Brisbane against anticipated Russian threats. However the fort was also used during the World War2.The fort stands as an evidence of Brisbane's military strength. The work of the fort began in 1880 and was completed in 1881.However the fort was isolated after the world war. The fort was taken over by the Ampol Pvt Ltd. and used mostly used as a refinery. However the fort was later handed over to the people and given to its present caretakers.
Description of Fort Lytton : The fort has an area in the rear where 64 pdr gun positions with WW2 hood visible. The room below WW2 provided the engine. It is a typical nineteenth century garrison –a pentagonal shaped fortress behind grassy embankments. It is located ear the Brisbane River and was created in order to control river mines. Queensland relied heavily on Fort Lytton for a permanent defence position.
