HISTORY OF THE NEWSTEAD HOUSE

Built in 1846 by Patrick Leslie, one of the earliest pastoralists in Australia, the Newstead House in Brisbane , is acknowledged to be the oldest surviving residence in Brisbane. It is a picturesque house in Newstead Park on the Breakfast Creek bank of the Brisbane River, in the suburb of Newstead in Queensland, Australia. Brisbane's Newstead House was occupied by American forces during World War II and after the War converted into a beautiful public museum.

LOCATION OF NEWSTEAD HOUSE, BRISBANE

Starting where Breakfast Creek meets Brisbane River walk up the Brisbane River along Kingsford Smith Drive and within less than half an hour you'll see Newstead House, now listed as a heritage building, on the corner of Breakfast Creek Road and Newstead Avenue.

TO REACH NEWSTEAD HOUSE:

Drive approximately 10 min from Brisbane CBD via Wickham Street through Fortitude Valley and then through Breakfast Creek Road.

Alternatively, take a 300 or 302 bus from Adelaide Street and get down at Stop 12.

TIMING:

The museum is Open :Monday to Friday 10 am – 4 pm , and Saturday 2 pm -5 pm (Weddings and other functions)

Remember that the last admission is one hour before the closing time that's been advertised.

THINGS TO SEE AT NEWSTEAD HOUSE, BRISBANE :

• Newstead House is the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon. Admire the gracious exterior of this house that has been restored to its late Victorian grandeur, and stroll unhurriedly through the rooms. Take in the evidence of the original 1846 cottage as you view the upper rooms that have been done up in the 1860-1890s style.

• On Sunday afternoon 2 pm to 4:30 pm, between March and November,there's a special tea-taking session for the visitors. Sip a cuppa Devonshire tea as you enjoy the view of the wide manorial grounds from the verandah.

• The Newstead House Sunday Concert series- Enjoy free concerts on the lawns of Newstead House! Held in the manorial grounds, these musical concerts were introduced to showcase the talents of the Brisbane youth. Look out for the advertisements by the House management when you are in Brisbane.

• The first memorial to American soldiers in Australia is on the Newstead Grounds. Built in 1951, this memorial is a true tribute to the World War II martyrs.
