The Queensland Museum in Brisbane, which is presently located in the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank, had many temporary homes in the past. The Windmill In Wickham Terrace was the museum's first home. Later when the Queensland Museum required more space for the display of horse drawn coaches and carriages, the Cobb & Co Museum Campus was opened in Toowoomba in Queensland. There is yet another branch of the Museum located in Townsville that sports “Home to the Pandora” and “Centre for Maritime Archeology”. The Science Centre is located in the South Bank itself. Both the Museum and the Science Center remain open for all seven days of a week.

Features of the Museum:

  • The outdoor of the South Bank Queensland Museum comprises of an amazing “Dinosaur Garden” which displays various dinosaur models like the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops. These were previously displayed in the Old Museum at Exhibition Hall.
  • A mould of Dinosaur stampede and a skeleton of a Muttaburrasaurus, a plant-eating dinosaur named after the location of its discovery and a Driprotodon also draws the attention of the visitors.
  • A German A7V Tank is also a special item of exhibition. .
  • You can see a wide range of insect species, frogs and venomous snakes in the museum.
  • The Science Centre has many interactive, science based fun for all. If you are a visitor at the Science Centre, you cannot be a silent viewer. Everyone has to participate. These interactive displays are separated into three zones:

• The Body Zone: This zone includes a bike ride tandem that displays your skeleton on the mirror beside you! Also play with human jigsaw pieces and find out about the functions of your brain.

• The Earth Space: learn lots about the movement of planets, play with whirlpools and make waves of various shapes and sizes. Know about air pressure, lightening, gravitational pull and also what lies under the earth.

• Action Stations: freeze your shadow, and see your shapes changing in the mirrors, discover how a fridge works and build arches using giant blocks just for fun.

  • The Queensland Museum also serves as an educational institution that offers opportunities and loans to students as well as general public. The Queensland Museum is also responsible for organizing workshops, activities and seminars for both teachers and students.
