The City botanic gardens, earlier known as the - Queens Park - are the city's most mature gardens and despite the repeated floods that washed away many of the plants, the gardens still boast a collection of rare botanical species. This triangular shaped garden was established in 1855 and covers 20 hectares of land. The land was previously used as a vegetable garden by the convicts and in the early 19th century, the same area was utilized as a zoo. Features of the City botanic gardens, Brisbane: - A special collection of cycads, palms, figs and bamboo. - The bamboo grove that sports a collection of about 23 bamboo species. - There is also a bronze sculpture of James Morril - Don't forget to pass through the Weeping Fig Avenue. - There are two ornamental Ponds in the gardens, one of which was created by Henry Oakman who was the former manager of the Council's Park Department and a landscape architect. - The 380 metres Mangrove Broadwalk that floats on mud is also a major attraction of the City botanic gardens,Brisbane. - There is also a stone drinking fountain in the City botanic gardens which was built by stonemason John Petrie. - The City botanic gardens, Brisbane also has many picnic spots, which include sheltered as well as open grass areas. - The place is also rented for celebration of marriage ceremonies and other private occasions. - The City gardens also have a wonderful café that was previously the curator's cottage. The café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open daily from 8am to 5 pm. - The River Stage of the Gardens is used for many concerts and most importantly for the annual Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols. - Also, there are many interesting events and exhibitions that take place in the Gardens through the entire year. You can make a tour of the gardens with the help of experienced guides or all by yourself. The guided tour through the gardens takes about 1 hour and is available everyday from 11am to 1pm except on Sundays and public holidays. On the other hand, if you want to spend some quiet time with your own self amidst the soothing presence of nature explore the vast gardens by yourself at a gentle pace.
