ABOUT SOUTH BANK MARITIME MUSEUM, BRISBANE : One of the largest maritime museums in Australia, South Bank Maritime Museum in Brisbane was established in 1988. A self-funded institution that works to preserve Queensland's maritime heritage, Brisbane's South Bank Maritime Museum displays classic ship models, lighthouse equipment, naval engines, photographs, paintings, photographs and other historic articles. An important library for maritime research is also housed in the Museum. The museum was extended with government grants in 2001-02. LOCATION OF SOUTH BANKS MUSEUM IN BRISBANE: On the Brisbane River at the southern end of South Bank Parklands, Brisbane, the Museum is conveniently near the Goodwill Bridge and can be easily accessed by city buses. TIMINGS: The museum is open all days of the week from 9:30 am-4:30 pm and remains closed for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday MUSEUM COLLECTIONS: South Bank Maritime Museum in Brisbane houses an extensive collection of naval memorabilia such as: • Models of sailing vessels , including the Pandora , the Bounty and the Lucinda • Extensive collection of marine engines • Several vessels like the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Diamantina and plenty of small craft, whose restoration is carried out by the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland. • The Museum-owned steam tug , SS Forceful is the only steam tug in Queensland and the only vessel taking passengers from central Brisbane to Moreton Bay. The Museum conducts SS Forceful tours on the River Brisbane for 100 passengers from Good Friday to June and from early September to early December . Tour prices include morning tea, barbeque lunch and complimentary entry to the Museum. THINGS TO SEE AT SOUTH BANK MARITIME MUSEUM: • View the evolution of maritime exploration from the early navigators to the present day and see the location of almost 200 vessels that wrecked near Brisbane on a wall map. Trace the story of the infamous mutiny of the Bounty which caused the first recorded shipwreck. • See models of ships from the time of Egyptians to the modern-day luxury liners and all kinds of marine engines. • View one of the smallest yachts in the world that sailed the waters and cannons dating from the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. Tour the Diamantina , built in Queensland and commissioned in 1945. • Take as many photos as you want of these veterans of the oceans. • Buy scanned laser copies (cost includes postage) of the photographs from the maritime photograph collection in the Museum's Reference Library.
