Brisbane is the third largest metropolis in Australia and it is the capital of Queensland. Geographical Location of Brisbane The city of Brisbane is located on the upstream starting from the mouth of the Brisbane River. It is a compact city and it is built along the banks of the river. The city centre is located at the south eastern corner of Australia and the latitudinal and the longitudinal extent are 27°28' south and 153°02'east. The suburbs on the eastern side border the shores of the Moreton Bay. Geography of Brisbane: the location of the mountains The Great Dividing Range is one massive factor that marks the geography of Brisbane. The larger part of Brisbane lies on the coastal plains that lie on the eastern part of the Great Dividing Range. The urban areas though are dotted by many large hills that have an altitude of more than 300 meters. The important mountains in this range are the Mount Gravatt, Stephens Mountain, Mount Coot-tha and the Whites Hill. Geography of Brisbane: the flood plains The city of Brisbane is located in a low lying flood plain and so it is vulnerable to severe inundation. The suburban creeks are placed in a zig- zag fashion right across the extent of the city that increases the risk of local floods in the region. Within the span from 1893 to 1974 Brisbane has suffered from two major floods and has caused a severe damage to life and property. The 1974 flood conditions were further aggravated by the Cyclone Wanda and this damaged major parts of Coorparoo, Bulimba, Oxley, Rocklea and New Farm. This flood damaged innumerable parts of the city of Brisbane and the City Botanic Gardens were also flooded. This led to the growth of a new colony of mangrove swamps in the City Reach of the River. The Central Business District This part is situated in the curve of the river and it stretches for a small walkable distance of 2.2 kilometers. This forms another small yet important part of the geography of Brisbane.
