Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane is the premier performing arts and cultural venue in Brisbane. It is situated in New Farm, which is one of the suburbs of Brisbane. The venue, placed on the northern bank of the Brisbane River was initially a decommissioned power station. Later on it was transformed to a cultural venue and now the venue stages diverse programs that include live theatre, music, comedy and visual arts. The powerhouse is a multi-purpose venue that features the 425 seats Powerhouse Theater, the 200 seat Visy theatre and the Turbine Hall. The venue also boasts of an outdoor plaza, green spaces, a rooftop terrace, a bar and a restaurant. Brisbane Powerhouse houses avant-garde performances of local performers as well as performers from foreign territories. The primary goal of the cultural center is to celebrate the diversity of contemporary arts in Brisbane and to communicate this to rest of Australia and the world. The whole concept of creating such a venue was conceived by the Brisbane City Council and today is has become one of the most recognized cultural venues of the state as well as the country. The design of the center is unique; the combination of bold industrial structures, raw textures and graffitied walls with state of the art performance spaces, meeting and rehearsal rooms and outdoor areas, will immediately catch your attention. Apart from this, the picturesque riverside location further validates its position as one of the eye catching architectural marvels of the city. This whole new design was conceived by the architect Peter Roy. He was responsible for adapting the old structure of the building to create a state of the art venue. Several adjustments were made; like parts of the wall of the building was replaced and the Turbine Hall roof was removed. Peter Roy and his team created defined interior spaces and utilized materials from the damaged eastern wall and used them in other parts of the building. Some of the features of the old building still remain intact; for example the present day building still features a gantry crane and switch and the graffiti of the venue is the same one that was used in the old building. After the renovation work, the center was opened to the public for the first time in the year 2000. Since it's opening the Powerhouse has become the premium cultural venue of Brisbane and is considered to be the paradise for art lovers in the city.
