Queensland Cultural Center, Brisbane is one of the significant cultural venues of Brisbane. It is situated at the South Bank and houses Queensland Museum, State Library of Queensland, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. Besides these, the center also nestles several shops, cafes and restaurants. The venue stages numerous performances of several Brisbane based companies as well as companies touring the city.

The history of the venue is interesting. The site of the venue used to house the Cremorne Theatre, which used to be a popular cultural venue hosting shows of many legendary Australian artists. But then, in the year 1954 the theater was destroyed in fire. After eighteen long the local government decided to build a new Queensland Art Gallery at the location of the destroyed theater and later on the government decided to build a cultural center at the site. It was decided that the center would comprise of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Art Gallery.

The Queensland Art Gallery was built in 1895 and shifted its base to the Queensland Cultural Centre in1982. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre opened its door to the public in the year1985. The center boasts of some of the premier theaters of Brisbane like Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall, Cremorne Theatre, and the Playhouse. The Queensland Museum, which was established in 1862 previously, was housed in many buildings including The Windmill, Parliament House and General Post Office. However, the museum finally found its permanent home when it was shifted to the Queensland Cultural Centre in 1986. The State Library of Queensland, which was also known as the Public Library of Queensland in a similar had many homes, but then after 1988 the library became a part of the Queensland Cultural Centre.


The Queensland Art Gallery is open every day of the week from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Tours at the gallery are held at 11.00am and 1.00pm on weekdays and 11.00am and 3.00pm on the weekend. The Queensland Museum is also open on all days of the week from 9.30am to 5.00pm.
