Gabba Cricket Ground

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
The place where all cricket enthusiasts should find themselves is Brisbane, with its green tracts that allure the soul and beckon you to try a hand at any game that you are a champ in. Beginning with cricket and football up to tennis and swimming, the vacationer who is looking for a respite from the wear and tear of daily life, will find the city a pleasant breakaway. AsiaRooms.com is here offering you all the information regarding the Gabba Cricket Ground, in Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.

The Brisbane Cricket Ground is a major sports ground located in the suburbia of Woolloongabba and hence the name, the 'Gabba'. The plot where the ground is located was initially set aside in 1895 for purposes of playing cricket. The first match was hosted on 19 December, 1896 between the Parliament and the Press. Until the year 1931, The Gabba was not used for interstate or, for that matter, international matches. The first cricket Test match was held here between Australia and South Africa from November 27 to December 3, 1931.

However, cricket is hardly the only game hosted on the Brisbane Cricket grounds. Since 1993, the Gabba has been the home ground of the Brisbane Bears and the Brisbane Lions AFL teams. AFL Queensland has played matches here between 1905 and 1914 and from 1959 to 1971. (For your knowledge, Australian Rules football is a game played with a spheroid ball in an oval field). Association football matches were also hosted for English first division clubs like Blackpool FC, Everton FC and Manchester United. Between 1932 and 1959, The Gabba used to host rugby league matches including interstate as well as international competitions.

The ground that has its share in contributing to sports tourism encourages the influx of tourists who are passionate about the game, are high-spending, enjoy the experience and often stimulate other tourism types. Sports tourism also quantifies the size of the tourism industry, apart from assessing the benefits of event hosting and identifying the regions of the world that benefit from it. In this perspective, The Gabba is contextualized in the arena of inter-continental - and global - sports.
