The ANZAC in Anzac Square Brisbane stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers of these corps that launched the first major military action fought by Australia and New Zealand during WWI came to be known as ANZACS. On ANZAC Day 25 war memorial centers all over Australia have commemorative marches for these national heroes . ANZAC Square Brisbane is Queensland's own War Memorial Center . Set in peaceful surroundings in central Brisbane, the Anzac Square War Memorial in Brisbane's ANZAC Square has a Shrine of Remembrance with its Eternal Flame honoring the Australian martyrs. Just beside is the World War II Shrine of memories. TIMINGS : • The ANZAC War Memorial is open all days of the week • The World War II Shrine of Memories opens Monday to Friday from 9 am- 2:15 pm ENTRY FEE: Entry is FREE but a donation is appreciated. HOW TO REACH ANZAC SQUARE, BRISBANE : • The Memorial is located close to the Queen Street Mall, on Adelaide Street between Edward Street and Creek Street. • You can reach here by bus, train or Citycat , the local commuter vessel on the river. If you are driving, car parks are available too. THINGS TO SEE AT ANZAC SQUARE: • View statues in the park honoring fallen Australian soldiers who served in Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam wars overseas. Enjoy the beautiful radial pattern pathways, pools and lawns planted with palms, Bribie Island pines and bottle trees. • The Shrine of Remembrance made of Helicon sandstone lies at the heart of the park and consists of a Grecian Doric circular colonnade, symbolizing the years of peace. The Flame of Remembrance is set in an urn at the center of the Shrine. • The Shrine of Memories in the subway below the Shrine is a beautiful structure dedicated to WWII martyrs of the land. View the magnificent mosaic designed by Don Ross, made up of 1,4000 pieces of hand cut Venetian glass enamels. • Soils from war cemeteries around the world where Australian soldiers are buried are preserved in boxes in the Shrine. • If you want information on a a particular exhibit, Touch-Tell screens are scattered all over the park to help you.
