Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
The Cairns Show Wine Awards are held every year at Cairns in the last weekend of June. A number of awards given out include Cairns Show Association Trophy, Wine and Food Society of Cairns Trophy, Cairns Post Trophy, Andrew Corrigan Trophy, Champion Red of Show, Champion White of Show, Champion Wine of Show, Best Wine for Tropical Enjoyment, Plunkett Wines Strathbogie Ranges Reserve Shiraz, Kulkunbulla Vineyard Chardonnay, Plunkett Wines Strathbogie Ranges Reserve Shiraz, and Pokolbin Estate Vineyard Riesling. The vintage quality and pairing (with the meal course) is judged. An eminent panel of expert wine tasters adjudicates the awards. Leading wine manufacturers of Australia enter their wines into the various categories such as Sparkling, White Wine, Fragrant and Aromatic, White Wine, Light to Medium, Full Bodied Dry White Wines, Light Red, Medium Bodied Red (Pinot Noir), Medium Bodied Red (round Soft Tannins), Full Bodied Red (Firm Tannins), Dessert and Fortified and winning the respective award provides a major impetus to their brand. The awards are an attempt to not only applaud the effort made by the manufacturers to produce premium quality wine but also to educate the masses about the various categories available and about proper pairing. The wines entered into the awards must be in the public market at the time of the adjudication. The assessment process is partly thrown open to the public.
