Cairns City Council was constituted in the year 1995 by amalgamating the erstwhile Cairns City Council and Mulgrave Shire Council. Simultaneously amalgamation between the Gold Coast/Albert and Ipswich/Moreton in the state’s southeast region also took place. Mayor- The mayor of Cairns City is Cr Kevin Byrne.

- Ensuring that the operations of the Council are environmentally, economically, culturally and socially sustainable. Cairns City Council has recently developed a new Planning Scheme known as Cairns Plan for the City of Cairns in North Queensland. Cairns Plan consists of the city’s future development plans for the next 10 – 15 years. Cairns Plan provides the infrastructure for sustainable and creditworthy development within Cairns.
