A large chunk of the mainstream shops have Japanese staff but to your surprise you will find them speaking German as fluently as their mother tongue. All the written menus of the restaurants , brochures and other literature are available in almost all Western European languages. But Without knowing English, moving about in Cairns would be very difficult. One can also try and learn some of the basics of German and Japanese before going there. Apart form these major languages in use there are certain dialects spoken in different parts of Cairns. For example Yindiny, an aboriginal language is spoken south of Cairns which has typical terms assigned to some noises. Like ‘ganga’ means the sound of someone approaching, and so on. These aboriginal languages are actually spoken by the tribals of the region so there is no need to have athorough knowledge about them.
