Cairns boasts of a warm tropical climate that offers great opportunity for outdoor activities. The winter is balmy and the city experiences low rainfall and a warm summer with an extended period of wet season. In fact many tourists and visitors to Cairns consider the weather of Cairns similar to that of Hawaii islands.
Cairns has an average maximum temperature of 31.4 degrees Celsius and an average minimum temperature of 17.0 degrees Celsius.

The city experiences a hot season between the month of April and November. The average temperature during this time varies from 23-31°C. This temperature is ideal for beach and water activities.

The wet season with tropical monsoon commences from November and persists till March. There mean rainfall of Cairns is 2002.9 mm.
The Babindra Township, located at the southern end of the Cairns city is one of the wettest towns of Australia. It receives an annual rainfall of over 4200 mm. During this wet season, the monsoonal activity results in flooding of the Mulgrave and Barron Rivers, disrupting rail and road access to the city.

The Average temperature is 18-26°C during the winter season which is usually sunny and dry.

Like other regions of North Queensland, Cairns experiences Tropical Cyclones that occur between the months of November and May. The major cyclones that have affected the city are Cyclone Rona, Cyclone Justin, Cyclone Steve, Cyclone Abigail and the recent
Cyclone Larry(2006).
